All at once, the door to the great hall opened, and the old village priest staggered in. “Wait!” he croaked to Gunnar. “I bear terrible news. I have been praying these past seven days for the spirit of Astrid, guiding her soul to Valhalla. Evil spirits have led her astray, and, instead, Astrid’s soul has been taken below to the underworld, in Hel!”

The great hall fell silent at the priest’s pronouncement. Hel was a realm of torment, where the souls of the wicked were sent to be punished. How could this happen to Astrid, an honored and loyal mother and wife, loyal friend to everyone in the village?

“We will all make offerings to the gods,” the priest explained. “We will all pray for the gods to intercede and rescue Astrid’s spirit from Hel and bring her to her rightful place in Valhalla.”

Gunnar stood before the gathered village in the hall. “I will go to Asgard myself,” he declared, “and bring my beloved Astrid to her rightful resting place. But I do not know the way.”

The old priest explained to Gunnar that he would need to travel to the great ash tree Yggdrasil, whose branches grew up to the heavens, and whose roots grew down into Hel. There he would need to descend the roots, find the spirit of Astrid and rescue her from the clutches of the dragon Nidhogg, who ensnared all souls in the underworld.

Gunnar gathered his shield and armor, girded on his sword and helmet and set out at once for the Yggdrasil tree. Traveling for many days, Gunnar at last arrived at the tree. The great trunk of the mighty ash was as big as a mountain, and its branches spread high into the sky and disappeared into the heavens. Birds flew in flocks about its branches and nestled in its boughs, which hung heavy with ivy and mistletoe. Around the great trunk, herds of deer and warrens of rabbits darted among its buttressing roots.
